In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
