In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major events leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
