Fierce Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to stay indoors as strong winds batter the country.

Severe gales attaining velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 homes lacking electricity and led agencies to cancel more than 100 aircraft departures, as reported by regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the complete southern region and southern sections of the northern region, per the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been urged to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for more electricity and network failures.

Widespread Damage and Crisis Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting homes predominantly in the South Island, though agencies report that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have reported that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, and power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being struck by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a woman was blown onto oncoming traffic on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services in and out of the urban area have been cancelled as a result of the winds, while various routes and public facilities are not operating.

At the same time authorities in Canterbury have declared a crisis declaration, to assist recovery activities.

Strike Action Amid Extreme Weather

These intense gusts on this day come as many of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", calling for improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the intense climate has forced them to alter certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping Australia, causing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Authorities have issued fire bans for fear of forest fires.
