A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
